1846 Voyage Carrying the Rauehorst Family

The OLOF sailed in the Mediterranean in the beginning of 1846, departed from Marseille on February 12 and arrived in Antwerpen on March 6. The voyage from Gibraltar to Antwerpen only took nine days, a nice speed.  Probably the “Olof” left Antwerpen on April 17 but might also have been delayed.  Here and at this time the painting of the “Olof” was probably made. The crew of the ship was normally 16, the captain included. Source: Ingvar Henricson

OLOF Arrival in NewYork City

The passenger list of the OLOF signed by Johan Olof Almgren is dated June 1, 1846. It appears that this passenger list date is based upon the submission of this list.  However, one newspaper of the time reported on the afternoon of May 30, 1846, that the OLOF has actually arrived that day.  The following is an excerpt from the New York paper the “Commercial Advertiser” dated May 30, 1846.

It appears that “OLOF” returned to Antwerp after picking up a load of ??????in ??????? arriving there in the end of July or the beginning of August. The “OLOF” was reported to have passed the Isle of Wright on July 26 destined to Antwerp.  In Antwerp Almgren fell ill and died on September 6.1846.

On the “OLOF” a man named Wesström, probably the former firstmate, took over the command and made another round trip to New York and returned to Antwerpen probably in January 1847.  Later this year Berndt Johan Bräcke from Gefle became the master of the “OLOF”.  On Dec 8 1847 in Gothenburgh he hired 15 men for the journey Göteborg – London – Shields – Genua – Torrevieja  – Gefle.
